How
you can help the NACHP
It
may come as no suprise to learn that mental health
problems in the UK are on the increase. Figures show
that that six times as many people are referred to
mental health services today as they were in 1946,
before the NHS was created.
This has largely been the result of changes in our societal
make-up and the increased pressures today's lifestyle
has put us under. People who live alone are more prone
to mental illness and the number of one-person households
has doubled since 1951. Homelessness and drugs have also
had a big effect on the nation's mental health, and reports
show that the number of men suffering
a mental health issue has soared by 70%, while the number
of women with a mental health problem has risen by 38%.
Perhaps
most worrying is the number of young
people being admitted to hospital for mental illness
-- a rate which has doubled over the last 25 years. The
suicide rate for under-25s has also shot up by 71% in
the last decade alone. With
the NHS suffering huge backlogs in being able to provide
relevant mental health services, and the growth of
the complementary medicine profession offering alternative
approaches to tackling mental health problems, it is
little wonder that the general public are often confused
and uncertain about which route to take to solve their
mental health issues. In particular, many people find
that their GP or local NHS service to be particulary
unhelpful when 'less critical' mental health concerns
such as fears or phobias are given little attention.
The NACHP believes that the public needs to be given
the right kind of information on the
most appropriate therapies suitable for the prevailing
condition. One therapist or counsellor may be more qualified
or experienced in a particular field than another. Some
therapists or counsellors would not be best suited to
provide, for example, proper treatment strategies for
clinical depression or post-traumatic stress disorder.
It is our intention to provide the best help we can give
the public. We do this through our National UK Helpline
which helps callers to identify the best kind of therapy
and to locate a suitably accredited therapist in their
area. We call upon our own qualified Members in this
regard, and make referrals to other qualified clinicians.Like
many other charities, we receive no government funding.
We employ no full-time staff, so all of our expenditure
goes to benefiting the public through raising awareness
of mental health issues, publising information on therapy
practice and establishing ethical and practice guidelines
for those in the profession.
If you are able to help us financially to fulfil our
charitable obligations, we would welcome any contributions
you could make. We do not have online donation facilities
